The Garbage Can Story
Looks Like A Garbage CanThe much photographed "lid less" so called garbage can in our back refurbing yard, this can is NOT used for garbage. This Garbage can is used to contain and store our USED lexan newsrack windows. If we have 800 plus expensive news paper vending machines out in the sun and weather 24 hours a day (across six states) the clear "LEXAN" plastic windows after about 3 or 4 years start to fog up and are no longer clear. This means the 800 plus newsracks we keep in shape and daily use in six mid west states, need about 250 a year windows replaced. Lexan plastic is very tough (expensive) (the bullet proof teller windows etc you see in the big cities are all "Lexan") and when no longer clear, when painted will last 25 years out in the weather as sign background and newspaper and magazine holders and displays. etc. I have some repainted many times, older then that. In fact we use the painted used Lexan quite often to replace steel panels that have rusted out In fact if an employee is ever caught throwing a used one away, they know they are as good as fired. Route people monthly year around bring their vehicles in from the route and unload all the old windows they have picked up from replacements on the 6,000 mile route. They use the yard to unload. It may be 20 below zero but they unload the plastic without fail into either a grocery cart used to hold them or a blue lidless garbage can with two sticks sticking up out of the snow......is full of the small or broken pieces with lessor uses but never the less both containers Lexan 100% gets used. If we make new internal displays..( we made about 150 last year...each uses about 2 old windows, (each) in its fabrication. That means we used over 300 last year just for that. We imported many from the old Arizona route, to get by. Display Inserts which have increased ou business, are 100% made of nothing at all except used Lexan. We make most of our estimated 1200 newsrack signs (some racks have more then one sign) out of cardboard and laminate the cardboard which lasts about a year. When we have enough used Lexan we paint them and use vinyl letters for signing, which lasts about 5 years and then have to repaint the plastic and reapplying new vinyl letters every 5 years. This means we can not replace windows fast enough, especially over the winter, to get enough used Lexan to make what we need to keep things updated like we desire. What is in the garbage can is NOT garbage, It is NOT a garbage can, indeed, it is a LEXAN plastic container and it IS CRUCIAL to our business that looks like survival or improvement of our business. This Lexan container does not need a lid. Lexan is very heavy and does not blow about. This plastic had been out in the weather for 3 to 5 years already and will likely get another ten at least before we would even consider to dispose of it... The stick upright help us spot the container in the snow drift when unloading. So when is a garbage container NOT a garbage container and a lid is not feasible? Simple and Vital Answer: When it is being used as a Lexan Container.
