In US history it was always the free press that restrained local governments gone berserk and out of control by sounding alarms and notifying the public to rise up when rights were being over ran by an overzealous government.

No more, now the media are in a rapid decline in affect and audience. The Minneapolis Tribune recently resold for 1/2 what it sold for just a year ago. The major Boston paper was devalued 40% in the last year etc.

The result of the affect of the internet on local newspapers and television is they consider THE INTERNET and a web site publisher "the enemy" that is killing them.

The taboo is not to print or announce one word about the existence of any information appearing primarily on a web site that carries local information.  That would be promoting what is sapping off their readers or viewers looking for local information.

The web can be and is updated almost instantly and available from anywhere at any time. They can not match that and the public they have always controlled must not be allowed to become aware of it to try to hang on to their traditional power to dispense and control what their traditional audience have access to.

They have long lost their world news hold and most now try hyper LOCALISM to retain any hold on the long term readers.

If you publish a web site that gets an audience, on a local issue, both the site and you no longer exist.

Recent example;

Our store had a burglary overnight discovered at 8am. Our Video cameras photos of the burglar (see live sample in right side bar) were excellent, full faced and emailed to the police individual department officers where positive identification was made, and the burglar was arrested and in jail by ten am.  Two hours from discovery to jailed. That was an all time record on police work I am sure and it NEVER GOT ONE LINE MENTION IN ANY LOCAL MEDIA.

To get the local information first or at least near top of the list, they have to butter up to city officials. If they exposed their major "local news source" buddies wrong doings they would be promptly dropped to the "no longer any ready access" to city stories.
